2020 Lighting Trends

Lighting Design recently got back from a trip to the Lightovation Dallas International Lighting Show at the Dallas Market in, of course, Dallas, Texas. It was a fun and exhausting trip. To give you an idea, the Market takes place at the Dallas World Trade Center (WTC). The WTC has two buildings with one building having four large floors and the other building having 15 smaller floors. Every floor is filled with showrooms for lighting, fans, home decor, and fun trinkets.

The Market certainly lives up to its name as being an international lighting show. It is the place to see all the new lights that will be coming out in that year. Here are a few trends we noticed while going around: basket lights/natural materials, blacks and golds, textured glass, oversized pendants, and felt material.

  Basket Lights/Natural Materials

Basket lights made out of rattan or other natural-looking materials are a huge trend for 2020. It is an extremely popular style we saw in almost every showroom. A natural light like this can pull a room together to get the natural materials look that is so popular now.

Blacks and Golds

Black finished fixtures started to come into popularity in 2019. In 2020 we only expect that trend to explode. Many brands decided to expand on lines that did well in 2019 to add a fixture with a black finish. Gold is still popular! We thought it might die out, but it still appears to be a strong contender.

Textured Glass

Textured glass appeared in just about every showroom we visited. Lighting Design particularly likes textured glass for customers as it is much easier to keep clean. While clear glass is pretty, it often ends up being “not feasible.” With so many textured glass options, it will be great to offer our customers glass fixtures that are good looking and practical.

Oversized Pendants

Oversized pendants were another trend we noticed at Market. While not workable in smaller spaces, the oversized pendants have a lot of potential. The below pendants are some we saw for the first time at Market. They will be available soon, so, for now, these photos will have to do!

Felt Material

In a nod to the 1960s, felt lighting is starting to appear. It doesn’t seem to be a huge trend just yet. But as it rolls out in 2020 it could definitely become one. Felt lighting is unique in any room and manufacturers have done a really good job of fitting the felt on fixtures that still have a modern farmhouse or mid-century modern vibe. And another benefit of felt? It can be a great way to help with sound absorption.

That’s all for now! Let us know as 2020 goes on if you see any of these trends or what you are noticing. We love to hear what our audience thinks too, so feel free to leave a comment too!
