3 Key Features of Contemporary Gothic Interior Design
Thanks to Netflix's hit show, "Wednesday," Gothic themes and trends are on the rise. Interior design is no exception to this. In 2023 we expect to see contemporary gothic design make a strong appearance in home decor. Contemporary gothic (sometimes known as modern gothic) style brings ornate and refined pieces of Gothicism and modernism together. The three key elements of contemporary gothic interior design are dark colors, ornate details, and moldings.
Contemporary gothic can, at first, be off-putting to those who hear it is trending especially for interior design. Many people's thoughts immediately go to dark or spooky themes such as skulls or gothic-style cathedrals. While modern gothic style is certainly influenced by these years of Gothicism it is mostly a more refined and present-day approach to the styling.
- Dark colors. This feature of contemporary gothic design should come as no surprise. Gothicism has long been known for its accentuation of deep hues. However, in Contemporary Gothic designs, these deep hues are purposefully placed to create depth in movement. Additionally, colors do not have to strictly adhere to black and grey tones. Dark greens, blues, and even pinks have made their appearance in several modern gothic designs. Gold finishes are also used to highlight decorative objects, and bring a touch of modernism to a traditionally matte color palette.
- Ornate details. Stained glass, flying buttresses, spires. Do these terms seem familiar to you? Most likely they've been used to describe key design elements of the gothic style. In recent years, ornate details of Contemporary Gothic interior design have been tempered by modernism. Ornate is reserved for ceiling or wall lights and smaller details such as florals. Marble typically makes an appearance in fireplaces or furniture pieces. The picture below is a perfect example of this. The ornate Tilda Five Light Chandelier by Arteriors in black pairs well with the Barry Dixon One Light Wall Sconce. Both deep colors bring in Gothicism while the marble fireplace adds modernism.
- Mouldings. Another aspect of Contemporary Gothic design is wall moulding. The most common mouldings found in modern Gothicism are crown, baseboard, and wall. Wall moulding is a classic design that makes the interior of the home feel open. Crown moulding is another great addition and nods to traditional Gothic design.
Lighting Design has put together a Contemporary Gothic collection of pieces to pay tribute to this design. Dark and ornate lighting fixtures were chosen along with marbled decor, cement coffee tables, and detailed mirrors. Throughout the collection, a mix of natural materials, ornate designs, and clean lines can be found. Shop the collection here.
