4 Tips on Cleaning Your Light Fixtures

In general, cleaning can be a bit of a drag. This can be especially true when it comes to a light fixture that is out-of-reach or easily noticed when it's dirty. Lighting Design offers the below tips to help you keep your lighting clean.

1.        NO DISHWASHER. We have seen it time and time again. A customer brings in a broken or damaged glass part of the fixture that they tried to clean in the dishwasher. Simply put, light fixtures are NOT dishwasher safe. Do not put any part of your light fixture in a dishwasher as it can not only ruin the fixture but also your dishwasher. Rather, refer to our next tip if you’re looking for a way to clean it.

2.       Soap and Water. Using a mild soap and lukewarm water to clean glass parts on your fixture can be a great tool. Of course, you’ll want to make sure it is just a glass piece and no electrical parts are near the soap/water mixture. Soak your piece in the water for a couple of minutes, rinse and dry off. This should get rid of most dirt/grime your item may have collected.

3.         Swiffer Dusters. It’s not that lighting fixtures collect more dust than everything else in your home, it’s that it’s more noticeable because of said lighting. If you haven’t discovered the genius that is the Swiffer Duster, you are missing out. Swiffer Dusters trap the dust so it doesn’t get everywhere leaving you with a well-dusted fixture. You can also get extendable handles for those hard-to-reach lights. The dusters are so easy to use and make such a difference it’s almost too good to be true. We recommend doing a quick dusting every other week to keep your fixtures dust-free.

4.           Exterior Lights. Last, but not least, don’t forget your exterior lights! Make sure they are turned off and you can hose them down with low/mild hose pressure. After, wipe them down with a dry cloth; we recommend microfiber. This way you will avoid any leftover water spots.

We hope you will find these suggestions helpful! Let us know in the comments if you try any of these ideas.
