How to Create a Cozy Living Room in 5 Simple Steps

How do you create a cozy living room? Whether you're wanting to do a complete living room refresh or add some cozy pieces we have inspiration and practical design tips to create a cozy living room. From seating options to lighting design ideas, we share some of the best tips for a cozy living room.

1. Seating. At the heart of every living room is some form of seating. Sofas, sectionals, chairs, and lounges all provide excellent seating options for you and your guests. There are many different ways to combine seating options. Some of the coziest arrangements for a living room include a sectional combined with two comfy chairs across from it, or two sofas facing each other, or perhaps a sofa facing two upholstered living room chairs. Whatever setup you decide on, for optimal coziness ensure that all seats face each other. This setup is also known as a conversation circle. With a conversation circle, you and your guests can comfortably carry on a discussion.

2. Layers. For a cozy living room, layered textiles are a must. Layers for your living room come in many forms. From blankets to pillows to rugs, and curtains each of these items can add warmth to your space. Caitlin Murray of Black Lacquer Design says, "The addition of lusher, richer textures that complement existing decor is an instant way to make any room feel that much cozier." Murray says the best way to incorporate layers is to, "Add a velvet pillow to a chair, or toss a faux-fur throw over your sofa for an instant dose of cozy."

And don't underestimate the power of curtains. A simple, light linen or cotton curtain does wonders for a cozy living room. Boxwood Avenue recommends that your curtains should be hung 8"+ above your window and the bottoms of the curtains should hit about 1/8"-1/4" above the ground or puddle 4"-6".

3. Lighting. Lighting is another important aspect of creating a cozy atmosphere. For ultimate coziness, we recommend light fixtures that are more ambient. Ambient is one of the Three Layers of Interior Lighting. Ambient lighting can include the use of sconces, table lamps, and floor lamps in your living room. While most living rooms are going to have overhead lighting, the key to a cozy living room is layered lighting. Sconces beside fireplaces or floor lamps by seating can provide softer light and therefore a more soft appeal.

4. Warm Tones. While bright whites and somber greys certainly had their interior design moment, rich tones and warm hues are coming back in a big way. And this is a huge win for the cozy living room lover! Natural wood offers warm tones for your living room. Some ways you can incorporate this are in the flooring or wood ceiling rafters.

Another way to add warm tones is to choose warm colors! Warm greens and browns are all the rage right now. One of Sherwin Williams' top colors is called Secret Garden. It's a deep warm green that would look perfect on an accent wall in a living room. Dark brown woods and decor also make great additions to a warm living room palette.

5. Balance. And finally, remember to strike a balance! Don't go too overboard on any one suggestion. Every home is different and every person is different. Find the vibes that work for you and your home and go with them.
