Selecting the Perfect Ceiling Fan for Your Home

Selecting the Perfect Ceiling Fan for Your Home

The first day of Summer is almost here. Summer brings high temps, humidity, bugs, fun, and longer days. Keeping cool is key and one of the best ways to keep cool in your home is through the use of ceiling fans. Here are several factors to consider so you can choose the perfect ceiling fan for your home.

  • Location. One of the first things to think about when selecting a new ceiling fan, is where it will be going. Will you be placing it inside or outside? If the fan will be outdoors, be sure to purchase an outdoor-rate fan. If the fan will be going outside but completely covered, you can do a damp-rated ceiling fan. However, be sure that it will not be exposed to any elements such as direct sun, winds, or snow. Even direct sunlight can easily fade ceiling fans that are not made for outdoor conditions. Outdoor ceiling fans are typically made with sun, rust, and water-resistant finishes. This makes them the perfect addition to any outdoor space.

  • Need. Consider what the need is for the place your ceiling fan will be going. Do you live in a place where the summers get really hot? Do you have a vaulted ceiling? How often do you anticipate using your fan? If you answered yes, or as often as possible to any of those questions, you should consider need when purchasing a ceiling fan. If you live somewhere that gets really warm or the room the fan will be installed gets warm, opt for a fan that delivers a high CFM. CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. It means how much air flow does the fan deliver every minute? Opt for a higher CFM 3500 or more if this is the case. Hunter Fans offer Surespeed™ to give off advanced levels of CFM. The Hunter Georgetown 52" Ceiling Fan is an excellent choice to move air. For vaulted ceilings, be sure to select a compatible fan or purchase a slope ceiling fan kit. And finally, if you plan on using your fan year-round, be sure to select a ceiling fan with five-year warranty. Usually, these warranties are on the fan motor itself; which is the most important part. The warranties are created to give the consumer peace-of-mind to use their ceiling fan all year long.

  • Style. What style do you want your ceiling fan to be? Fan styles come in modern, traditional, transitional, farmhouse, rustic, and more. You can also opt for fandeliers if you want the look of a chandelier but the benefits of a ceiling fan. With everything in the home, it comes down to personal style. Don't be afraid to select a fan that fits your style. You'll be happier and use your ceiling fans more in the long-run if they are a style you like.

  • Room size. Room size matters when choosing the size of your ceiling fan. Of course, the bigger the room, the bigger the fan you will need. Generally, the rule is for a room less than 600 square feet, select a ceiling fan that has a blade sweep of 36-44". For a room of about 100-150 square feet, choose a ceiling fan between 52-56". And finally, for rooms bigger than 150 square feet select a fan about 60-72" in size. You will also want to keep in mind the ceiling height. If a ceiling fan hangs too high, you may not feel the air, or too low and you could be running into it. See our size guide in our Ceiling Fan Buying Guide

  • Finish. Gone are the days of the builder-grade, white ceiling fans. Today, ceiling fans come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Finishes range from white, silver, gold, brass, bronze, and more. If there is a finish you want or are trying to match, it's almost guaranteed you can find a ceiling fan that comes in your desired finish.
