Small Space, Big Impact - The Best Lighting For Apartments

Apartment living comes with its own set of challenges, and one of those includes properly lighting an apartment. Apartment lighting is just as important as home lighting because it affects how you see and relax in your space. Here are four apartment lighting ideas to get you started.

Choose Space-Saving Light Fixtures

One way to save space on lighting in your apartment is by selecting light fixtures that save space. Some space-saving light fixtures include wall sconces and/or picture lighting. Plug-in sconces, swing arm sconces, and even picture lighting can be great alternatives if you don't have room for traditional lamps or bigger light fixtures. Having the fixtures on the wall leaves space on the floor and tables for other apartment essentials. A concern about wall sconces in an apartment is the installation. A great tip, especially if you don't have a plug available or an electrical box, is to install the sconce on the wall and use a rechargeable light bulb for light.  Plus, many picture lights now come as integrated LED rechargeables.

Use Multi-Functional Lights

Have you ever seen a table lamp with storage or charging ports? This would be an excellent way to have cozy apartment lighting that is also very functional. A storage lamp provides space and lighting, while a lamp or light with a charger lets you charge electronic devices and have light simultaneously. This is especially handy in small apartments where outlets are in short supply.

Maximize Natural Light

Natural light should be your best friend when living in an apartment. Not only is natural light good for your health, but it also provides necessary lighting for daily tasks. One way to optimize natural lighting in your apartment is to use mirrors to reflect natural light—place mirrors across from or near windows where the light will bounce off them. Additionally, try to select light filtering curtains or shades rather than blackout shades. Blackout shades can be really nice in a bedroom (especially if you like to sleep in), but they can hinder the amount of natural light your apartment may get. And finally, arrange your furniture to avoid blocking windows. Be sure things like bookcases, TVs, and/or couches are against solid walls rather than windows to allow as much sunlight in as possible.

Don't Be Afraid of Statement Lighting

Just because you are searching for the best lighting for apartments doesn't mean you can't make a statement. Statement lighting is one of the best ways to decorate your apartment and serve an essential purpose. Just because you must be space-conscious doesn't mean your lighting can't stand out. There are many beautiful statement pieces, like mini chandeliers, pendants, and even flush mounts, that will make a significant impact and still fit perfectly into apartment living.
