The Ultimate Guide to Lighting Finishes: What They Look Like in Every Space

Light fixtures come in all different sizes, shapes, and colors. The color, or finish, of a light fixture can impact the style of the light. Whether you're looking for ceiling light fixtures like chandeliers, pendants, flushmounts, etc., or wall lights like sconces, bath bars, and exterior lighting, finding the correct finish will impact how the light fits in your space. Let's talk about the basic groups of lighting finishes. There are black, gold, nickel, and bronze as the four main finishes that light fixtures come in. Now, every brand has its own spin and styling of each finish and how they apply that finish to their lighting. Let's explore some different options in each category.

Black Finish

Black finish for lighting fixtures has exploded in popularity over the last several years. Many homeowners gravitate toward a black finish for their lighting because it brings a modern and clean appeal to their home.

Matte black is a popular choice of sheen for black lighting fixtures. The Bartlet One Light Pendant by Savoy House is a good example of matte black.

Black finish outdoor fixtures have become one of the most popular choices for exterior lighting. This is due to the ability of a black finish to hide dirt and dust build-up and the modern curb appeal a black finish offers homeowners.
The Republic Outdoor Lighting collection by Hinkley Lighting comes in several finishes, with black being the most popular.

Gold/Brass Finish

The other most popular fixture finish of the moment is gold/brass. What makes a gold or brass finish so appealing is that they are very versatile. These finishes can be incredibly bright or soft, which allows them to fit well in many home settings.

The Welsley collection by Capital Lighting comes in aged brass. It's a really warm-toned finish. This aged brass finish would look good in spaces with complementary warm undertones.

The Merida pendant by Mitzi also comes in aged brass. This particular finish is a bit brighter, which shows how finishes can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, even if they have the same name.

The Allistair Three Light Sconce by Z-Lite is a good example of a bright gold. Z-Lite has chosen the name "modern gold" for this finish. It's a bright, and true example of a gold finish light.

Nickel Finish

Nickel is a classic light fixture finish. It is timeless in its appeal and usually goes well in many homes. The most popular choices are usually a polished (shiny) or satin (matte) nickel.

The Atlantis Small Pendant by Visual Comfort Studio comes in a polished nickel. It's a classic finish with the perfect pendant shape for any kitchen or bedroom.

Bronze Finish

Bronze finish is characterized as a mix between a brown and black finish. It was very popular in the early 2000s when Tuscan interiors were all the rage. Recently, an antiqued version of bronze has been coming back around. Mainly due to the influence of vintage styles in modern homes becoming popular. Here are some examples of bronze light fixtures.

The Tobias Pendant by Troy Lighting has a cool, modern feel. The bronze finish adds a touch of traditional or vintage styling.
