5 Lighting Trends for 2023

Happy New Year! Lighting Design just got back from the Dallas Lightovation Market. Market is where we do our shopping for the year to bring our customers the best and brightest (pun intended) in lighting. In 2023, you can expect to see five major lighting trends--hammered glass, elevated classics, natural material frames, curves, and directional lighting.

Hammered Glass. One trend that was consistently found in each showroom, was hammered glass. Hammered glass is made to resemble hammered metal. However, the creation process is different since glass can't exactly be hammered. Where glass is embossed on one side to give it that hammered look. Hammered glass is a perfect middle ground between seeded and clear glass. While trendy, clear glass is sometimes not practical due to environmental conditions. Seeded glass is practical but some may not like the look of seeded glass in their home. Hammered glass is easy to keep looking clean while still offering a trendy glass alternative.

Elevated Classics. Classic fixtures are just that, classic! Lighting fixtures like this will always be around. In 2023, classic lighting fixtures are elevated with small details. Those little details include flared accents, arched tops, and textured finishes. One brand, Capital Lighting, brought elevated classics into almost every one of their new lighting introductions. One of our favorites, is the Presley 6-Light Chandelier. This chandelier features sleek contours and flared accents. It brings high design to every home. The Aged Brass finish invites a classic aesthetic that mixes with any style.

Natural Material Frames. Wood and bamboo frames made their debut back in 2021 in a few lighting showrooms. In 2023, they appeared at least twice in every showroom. It's safe to assume this year natural material lighting fixture frames will be found everywhere. The frames are likely to be wood plated as a solid piece of wood might break or bend more easily than metal. Some frames will simply be painted to look like a natural material. Whichever you prefer, this style is sure to elevate your home.

Cuboid lights in a showroom.

The Morina Collection from Kuzco Lighting is a fantastic way to bring natural tones and geometric designs inside the home. Stunning wood veneer provides a home for the frosted silicone diffuser and delivers ample up-and-down lighting that’s great for any space in the home. The modern cubist shapes and white oak or walnut color options blend well with modern décor or rustic-style interiors.

Effortlessly blending Matte Brass with black-stained mango wood, the Finn Chandelier by Capital Lighting creates a sophisticated aesthetic. The circular form and crisp angles add elegant dimension to this classic style.

Curves. Curved glass, curved metal, curve shades. Everything is about curves in 2023. While clean, modern lines are still very much an interior design trend, curves on fixtures are making a huge comeback. Curved lighting fixtures bring back traditional style without the Beauty and the Beast curls we saw 10 years ago.

Embodying true minimalist form, the Brody Medium Pendant from Capital Lighting brings a sleek, simplified style. The Aged Brass finish enhances the classic look of the white fabric shade to deliver a sophisticated, less-is-more design. The open-arched top meets again just below the shade to form a single socket, creating this unique look while balancing the pendant's light source.

Lewis from Hinkley Lighting offers traditional charm paired with updated, transitional elements. Tall natural paper shades feature fine stitching detail against a Black Oxide finish to enhance timeless interiors.

Directional Lighting. Typically, directional lighting is associated with track lighting. If there is anything the 2023 Market showed, is that track lighting is no longer necessary to get directional light. All types of lighting fixtures from pendants to chandeliers to sconces were brought to life with moveable heads. The Bacall Pendant from the Visual Comfort Studio collection is a perfect example of this. The main fixture base is moveable so you can direct the lighting whichever way you need it.
