Ceiling Fan Size Guides

Illustrated living room with a ceiling fan centered above a seating area. A sizing chart overlays the image, matching recommended fan blade sweep diameters to room size: rooms under 100 square feet should use a 36–44 inch blade sweep, rooms between 100 and 150 square feet should use a 52–56 inch blade sweep, and rooms over 150 square feet should use a 60–72 inch blade sweep. The graphic serves as a ceiling fan size guide for selecting the appropriate fan diameter based on room dimensions.

Ceiling Fan Blade Sweep

The size of your ceiling fan depends on the size of the room it is being installed in. For rooms with less than 100 square feet, choose a fan with a blade sweep of 36 to 44 inches. 100 to 150-square-foot rooms require a fan that is 52 to 56 inches wide. And finally, for rooms greater than 150 square feet, install a fan with a blade sweep of 60 to 72 inches.

Illustrated living room with a ceiling fan mounted on a downrod. A sizing chart overlays the image, showing recommended downrod lengths based on ceiling height: 9-foot ceilings use a 6-inch downrod, 10-foot ceilings use a 12-inch downrod, 12-foot ceilings use a 24-inch downrod, 14-foot ceilings use a 36-inch downrod, 16-foot ceilings use a 48-inch downrod, 18-foot ceilings use a 60-inch downrod, and 20-foot ceilings use a 72-inch downrod. The graphic serves as a ceiling fan downrod length guide for proper fan placement in rooms with varying ceiling heights.

Ceiling Fan Downrod Length

Ceiling fan downrod lengths should coordinate with ceiling heights. For example a 9 foot ceiling needs a 6 inch downrod, a ten foot ceiling a 12" downrod, and so on.

Diagram showing recommended ceiling fan installation for a sloped ceiling. A side-view illustration of a ceiling fan is mounted beneath an angled ceiling, with labels indicating rise and run to measure roof pitch. The diagram specifies a minimum 18-inch clearance between the fan blades and the sloped ceiling, and a minimum 7-foot clearance from the fan blades to the floor. A table provides suggested downrod lengths based on ceiling angle: 14°–18°: 12-inch downrod 22°–26°: 18-inch downrod 30°–33°: 24-inch downrod 37°–45°: 36-inch downrod The graphic is a black-and-white technical illustration designed to help determine proper ceiling fan mounting height and downrod length for vaulted or sloped ceilings.

Sloped Ceiling Fan Guide

If you have a sloped or vaulted ceiling, figuring out a compatible downrod is important. Additionally, check that your fan is sloped ceiling compatible, or purchase a sloped ceiling kit for your fan.
